I will protect the fatherless, and widows can trust in Me.

Jeremiah 49:11 (WEB)
Leave your fatherless children, I will preserve them alive;
and let your widows trust in me.

In Old Testament Hebrew culture, a child who was fatherless was considered an orphan, even if they were still under the care of their mother. This is why James says that pure religion is to take care of widows and orphans. God's heart is for those who are vulnerable; it is for the underdog and those who are exploited in our society.

I believe that this promise applies not only to those who have lost a father or husband, but to all who do not have a father or husband in their home. With divorce rates reaching the 50% mark in many Western countries, I believe this promise from God to protect the fatherless and widows is very relevant in the society we live in.

If you find yourself in a situation where you feel fatherless, take heart that our God and Father promises to protect you. If you are widowed, divorced, or separated from your husband in any way, God understands your needs and will care for you like no one else possibly could.

I thank God for this promise. In many ways, most of us have struggled with a sense of being fatherless at some point in our lives. May we experience our Papa's comforting love today, no matter the situation we find ourselves in.

Responsive Prayer:

Father, thank You that You are a father to the fatherless and that You place the lonely in families. It is Your loving heart that also protects the widows, single moms, and all who feel alone and without a caring father present. May Your love reach every part of my heart that, in some ways, feels fatherless as well, so that I might know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I am Your much-loved child and heir.

In Jesus’ name, I pray, Amen.
